Welcome to the Walker's Corner, where we are lacing up, embracing the challenge and walking together to get there!!
The walking group of Katy Fit strives to provide an atmosphere that is both encouraging and non-intimidating. The walking program is made up of dedicated, experienced coaches and assistant coaches who what to help walkers of all levels to reach a goal and have fun.
We are excited to work with a new and improved walking program this year at Katy Fit. These new schedules focus on recognizing the needs of several types of walkers and will challenge both the experienced and the new walkers to the group. The schedule changes will benefit everyone from those wanting to improve their level of fitness to those wanting to complete a half marathon or marathon.
We will have two color groups for the walkers with a head coach and assistant coaches for each color group:
PURPLE GROUP: This group will represent those walking a 14 minute pace or slower. This group will be subdivided into various pace groups to accommodate all levels of walkers.
Within this group there will be the opportunity to train to at a walk for 3 minutes and jog for 1 minute.
GOLD GROUP: This group will represent those walking 13:59 pace or faster. This group will allow for the opportunity to learn and practice race walking techniques.
TARGET RACES: Our target half marathon race for both color groups will be the Houston Half Marathon. Walkers can complete this event either individually or as part of a relay team. More information will be provided at a later date regarding registration and fees which are not included in the Katy Fit registration.
After completing this race, training will continue and focus on improving speeds for a half marathon or training for a marathon. The target races will be either the USAFIT half marathon/marathon and/or the Aramco Half Marathon and Chevron Houston Marathon, both are in January. More information will be provided at a later date on registration and fees which are not included in the Katy Fit registration. Please not if you are interested in the Aramco Half or the Chevron Marathon you will need to register in July as THESE EVENTS SELL OUT VERY QUICKLY!!
Along the way, there will be 5ks, 10ks,10 milers, 25ks, 30ks and a 21 mile cookie run to prepare the walkers for their target event(s). There will also be opportunities to volunteer at different events which will expose walkers to different aspects of racing.
WEEKLY NEWS LETTERS: You will receive weekly news letters from the head coach for your color group updating you about the walks, upcoming events and news of the week. You will need to go to the Katy Fit page to sign up to receive the newsletters.

DISCUSSION BOARD: Is located under the discussion tab on the Katy Fit website. Registration is not required to view the messages, but it is required to be able to post to the board.
KATY FIT WEB PAGE: You will receive a password which will allow you access to all the weekly training schedules. The webpage will post pictures and links to various events and announcements.
SEMINARS: Seminars will be held on most Saturdays following the walks. Seminars topics will be of interest to both walkers and runners. Both walking color groups will plan their start times in order to finish their walks in time to participate in these presentations which sometimes include door prizes and giveaways. It will be an opportunity to get to meet some other Katy Fitizens too!
There will be numerous social activities throughout the season that provide opportunities to make new friends and spouses are included in these events.
There will be a "half way there" party and a pre-marathon pasta party that the walkers will host for those participating in the USAFIT half marathon/marathon. There are plans in the works to have several other social events and Luke's Locker parties/discount nights which will be communicated through the weekly emails.
In addition, the walking groups will also host the alternate 25k which will provide insight and understanding as to what goes into the organizing one of these events. There is also the 21 mile cookie event which provides a fun time with lots of CRAZY rest stops along the way.
SATURDAYS WALKS: Schedules will be available on the Katy Fit website. Saturday walks will focus on distance and are walked at "comfortable" pace that is easily maintained. We will start on time so please arrive early. It is recommended you walk with the group for your safety and enjoyment.
DURING THE WEEK WALKS: Schedules will be available on the Katy Fit website for suggested during the week group training. It is highly recommended that you follow the schedule to help assist you in your training; focus will be on speed work and endurance.
STRETCHS: It is very important to stretch after finishing the walks to help cool down and prevent injuries. Group stretches will be lead by the assistant coaches or other lead walkers with emphasis on core, strengthening and breathing exercises.
SHOE TAGS: Please make the coaches aware of any medical condition that you may have. You will be given a shoe tag and will be REQUIRED to wear it. The shoe tag information should be filled out with your name, emergency contact information and if possible any medical conditions. You are strongly encouraged to carry a cell phone.
HYDRATION: Hydration is very important! You will be REQUIRED to carry a hydration system of your choice, for example: fuel belt, water bottle etc.
Half marathons are becoming popular events among walkers. Training for a walking a half marathon is a great way to get into shape. CROSSING THE FINISH LINE IS PRICELESS!
