About the Organizer
Scott Balin  docbalin@yahoo.com

Being a chiropractor, I have been treating athletes since the 90's in my practice. After hearing so much about this "26.2 mile thing" from my patients, I finally decided to do it. Now, many many many miles later, I find myself not only running, but eager to get others moving as well. Due to this passion to help others, I started to coach running, and now I find myself organizing this awesome group we call Katy Fit. Remember the recipe for a perfect run: The wind at your back, the sun in front of you, and friends by your side. My goal is to touch and enhance the lives of as many people as possible through hard work, perseverance, compassion, and most importantly friendship. Katy Fit...Change your Life!

Hi! I'm Fred Knies and I'm 56 years old with 10 children (including my 5 in-law children), 13 grand children and a wonderful wife! Began running with Katy Fit in July 2003 and ran my first marathon in January, 2004. Qualified for and ran Boston in April 2005. Have now completed a total of 14 marathons, including 4 Boston Marathons and 2 New York Marathons. I love Katy Fit and what it has done for me and can do for others. The fellowship is the BEST! I hate running (not), but I love the fellowship and EATING whatever I want! Eight of my children, wife and self have now completed at least one marathon.

I have been with Katy Fit for 5 years and I have run several 5ks, half and full marathons. I have placed 2nd twice in my age group and 3rd once in the last 3 5ks I did. I have done an ultra marathon (Sun Mart) 3 times and believe it or not that is my favorite thing to do. Love running those trails! This is my second year as an assistant coach for ATP and have enjoyed every bit of it.

On my first morning with Katy Fit I was thrown to the warriors of the Blue/Green group. I couldn’t keep up, felt defeated and vowed to NEVER come back. This is now my 8th season. I was a Yellow coach for 3 yrs and this is my 2nd year coaching in ATP. Though they don’t need my coaching, I’m proud to be running with them. I’ve completed 17 marathons (3 Boston Marathons), 5-50k’s, 1-50 miler, multiple sprint triathlons and 2-half Irons. I keep planning to quit, but think I may have a problem (?).

I believe in the power of God, family, cross training, core, yoga, balance in life, and making my own sushi.

And, I believe in the power of Katy Fit!
Phil Trumbly  siddingo@sbcglobal.net

Over the past 5 years I have enjoyed running with Katy Fit and have run marathons around the country including Big Sur, NYC, and Boston. I like to run hard and compete (even though I am continually getting "Brammered"), and want to help fellow runners improve to maximize their potential.

I'm interested in researching alternative training techniques, optimizing race day hydration and nutrition, shoe selection, and dealing with injury issues; so feel free to contact me with any questions about this stuff.

Ron Hill  rwhill@chevron.com
Assistant Coach

I’ve been running year around with ATP for two years now and have improved dramatically not only in my running endeavors, but also in quality of life. My collective “ATP Family” has encouraged me to push myself beyond what I thought possible and has led me to set goals I would have fallen down laughing at two years ago – and I’m just getting started. The most satisfying part of coaching for me is serving as a “bar” for other runners to aspire to and then surpass (which is my hope) and to act as a walking (I mean running) example of what ATP is all about - which for me is hard work, family and faith, “run with endurance the race that is set before you….”. The ability diverse model within ATP bodes well for the program as it provides ample performance levels; allowing just about anyone to jump in, work hard and start chasing the next fastest runner.

My marathon destinations so far have been Houston, Oklahoma City, Chicago and Boston, but the best part by far has been the journey – okay I lied, running a PR at Boston was the best part.…….

I have been running for many years since high school. I ran mainly just 5ks but in the past few years have run longer distances. I have run a few marathons and half marathons. We have teamed up and ran a few relay races such as Beach to Bay or the Texas Independence Relay Run, which is a total of 203 miles. It has been a great time. I enjoy staying in shape and like to do most anything, running, biking and getting better at swimming.

After running my first Houston Marathon last January, I knew that I wanted more and that I could give back by helping coach others and encourage them in their training. Unfortunately, an injury is preventing me from running the marathon this upcoming year. I am planning on remaining active with the Yellow Full Marathon group and showing  you, my fellow runners, that you can come back from an injury and continue running if you are determined, positive, and willing to work on recovering and running smart (i.e listening to your body). I hope my positive attitude helps keep you encouraged as you start training for the Houston Marathon this year!!

Hi, I'm Jason and this is my 3rd season with Katy Fit and my first as a coach. I've run the Houston Marathon the last two years as well as the warm-up series races and a few other half's, 10K, and 5K races along the way. While I'm fairly new to running I am indebted to Katy Fit for what I've learned the past two seasons and since I joined basically to save face (feel free to ask me about it) I've agreed to coach and hopefully help someone else along the way. I look forward to getting to know all of you and sharing in this experience.

And it's true - Katy Fit will change your life.

I been a runner most of my life, but only a serious one since I joined Katy fit 4 years ago. The Katy fit program prepared me to run 3 half marathons, but more importantly allowed me to improve my overall health and fitness. My wife Therese joined three years ago and completed two halfs.

An unanticipated benefit of the program has been the many friendships I have developed and the great camaraderie of the group. The groups support through the heat, cold, long runs and early mornings gets you out of bed on Saturday mornings. A stop at Starbucks is a perfect way to reward myself for the morning workout. Looking forward to another great season.

I'm Shelagh (just pronounce it 'Sheila') - the other yellow Brit. This will be my second year with KatyFit after joining last year as an escape from 2 small children for a couple of hours each Saturday. Going shopping would have been a more relaxing alternative, but a lot less fun. In my previous lives I was a competitive fencer and did a few (slow) triathlons for fun but KatyFit was my first attempt at endurance running - and the program works. I'm hoping I can help others get the same enjoyment and sense of achievement that I did.

This is my fifth year with Katy Fit and there is no turning back. After completion of my first marathon in 2006, I knew I wanted to do it again.

The training is tough but the rewards are so great! I've been rewarded with better health, more confidence and a sense of will in conquering some very difficult challenges. Finding the time to train is a big obstacle but having so many Katy Fit friends to run with makes it easier to do!

I look forward to another great year of running. See you on the trails!

Why I coach: I really enjoyed my first marathons with a USA Fit program and see coaching as a way to pay back the coaches who first got me fired up about running. In addition, it is really gratifying to see people work hard at attaining a goal and make dramatic improvements in their ability in six short months. I ran my first and what I thought would be my only marathon as part of a bet a few years ago. I ran the next six once I learned how much fun it was experiencing a marathon and seeing how good you felt in comparison to how I generally felt before I started distance running. My wife and I have four kids. When I am not running around west Houston, or running after kids, I spend my time coaching and watching soccer, teaching CCE, reading and being a college professor.

I decided to coach for the first time last season (2009-2010) because there was a need for a RED, CONTINUOUS 1/2 marathon coach after the season started. My first run in that season was as a full-marathon yellow runner, after which that open coaching position sounded great to me (sorry Dennis, no offense). I enjoyed my group so much last year that I've decided to do it again! I've run a handful of 1/2 marathons over the last couple of years and look forward to needing two hands to count my 1/2 marathons starting in February of 2011. So if you're interested in running a 1/2 marathon and you are coordinated enough to drink while running, sign up for my group!!!!!

I was asked to run a few miles with a friend during her 1st Marathon. After hearing and seeing the crowds, I knew I wanted to train for the Houston Marathon.

Katy Fit is awesome and the coaches are always there to offer tips and support during our runs. It made me feel so much more confident. I decided I would like to coach so I could try and give back what Katy Fit gave to me . . . very much support, motivation and confidence.

This year my daughter is training for her 1st Marathon and we hope to run the Houston Chevron Marathon together!

I'm sure I would not be a distance runner, a coach and also be fit and in good health if I wasn't in this interesting and upbeat Katy Fit group. It's so much fun running in a group as you converse with others, learn so many new things from others and share plenty of laughs with those you run with. I never thought I'd be running marathons, let alone running marathons at the age of 72, but Katy Fit keeps me enthused and doing just that. Half Marathon - Turtles
A rather sedentary job at IBM had turned me into a couch-potato until one day I decided to get off my butt and get active. I went back to my roots as a runner, but to be honest - running alone isn't very challenging or instructive, so when a friend suggested we train to run a half-marathon with KatyFit I jumped at the chance.
As sick as it sounds, I began to really look forward to those 6am runs on Saturdays with all my friends. The 2009 season was awesome and I learned so much from so many fun people. As a coach I'm all about setting and meeting personal goals. You don't have to be the fastest runner out there, but getting up, getting out, and getting going are 75% of the work, and going the distance gets you across the goal line. And that's why we say TURTLES ROCK!!
