Training During The Holidays

Most American’s gain 5 during the holidays and keep 1 for the rest of their lives.

Our schedule has a couple of long workouts during the holidays but they will only give you about a 4,000 calorie surplus, so eat sensibly.

Incentive to eat sensibly is that every unneeded pound is worth about one second faster per mile, FREE SPEED!!!

Travel is tough on training. Here is a couple of aids:

  1. Find a relative or friend that is a walker or runner and hook up,
  2. Runners World Races and Places great training routes,
  3. Call or go online to the local running store and get the information on great routes or training groups.

Some other holiday strategies:

  1. Print out your Katy Fit schedule and map out a realistic schedule and stick to it.
  2. Take vacation time at the end of the year to match key training days or to get in more mileage.
  3. Eat and drink healthy first at the big holiday meals and parties then allow yourself a little of the good stuff.
  4. Keep a food journal for Thanksgiving to New Years.
  5. Keep a walking or running log for this same time period.
  6. At the parties find the room where your friends are and the food is not and talk, eat the healthy food first.
  7. Remember the law of diminishing returns ... the first bite will release the most pleasure hormones (sounds like food is akin to first love).
  8. Weigh yourself once a week over the holidays.

Coach Jack’s hard core holiday ideas:

  1. Boycott the holidays!
  2. If your relatives complain about you training make them train.
  3. Get rid of your car and run or walk your holiday errands.
  4. No excuses, thank God you don’t live up north with 10 below and snow drifts.
  5. Marathon more and eat less.
  6. Your real holiday is the USA Fit or Houston Marathon!
